You can take the classic prom transportation route and order a cliched limo... or you can go an alternative route and make a jaw-dropping grand entrance for your big debut.
1. Tour bus
Travel like a rock star in a glossy, tinted-window tour bus. If you're worried that rental prices might be a little steep, simply invite all of your friends - as in, all fifty of them. Many limousine services have tour or charter buses on hand as well. If you're feeling especially flashy, request a stretch limo SUV, which will have the same shock-value as any tour bus!
2. Yellow Taxi
Particularly clever for a suburbanite: you'll look like a busy city-dweller arriving to prom in a classic yellow taxi. Scour the phone books for taxi services and call ahead to find out if any retro yellow vehicles are available - the classic color is essential, so if your local service only operates, say, burgundy cars, move along to the next idea.
3. Tractor
Maybe your father is a farmer or maybe you've never even seen a cow, but arriving from the top of a giant green John Deere is bound to cause an amusing arrival. Extra prom points if you decorate the tractor to match your formal finery. If you don't have any farm-dwelling friends, dial up a local farmer and ask if you can borrow his wheels for a night. If all else fails, contact a tractor supply company and see if you can cut them a deal.
4. Convertible
Make your grand entrance from the interior of a shiny, bright convertible. To avoid looking windblown, go as slow as possible (what's the rush?) and protect your pretty updo with a Marilyn Monroe-esque scarf. Call around to local car dealerships, inquiring about their policy on borrowing (often you just need a reputable adult). Next, ask about their selection of convertibles and seal the deal!
5. Horse-drawn carriage
You'll be decked out and dressed up, much like an old Hollywood movie star. Why not make your prom arrival in an equally-retro ride? You and your date will be true showstoppers, but don't forget to bring a little extra fragrance - no one wants to smell horsey on prom night. Secure your stallion several months in advance, as horse-drawn carriages aren't exactly ordinary fare. If carriage companies are nowhere to be found, any horse will do.
6. Old-fashioned car
You don't have to be a car buff to see the appeal of going in a classic coupe. Pulling up in a sea of glitzy limos, you and your date will shine - subtly. Chances are your parents' or your date's parentals have one token car-collecting buddy. Promise him a nice dinner or plate of homemade goodies in return for a night on the town is his prize ride.
