Prom Dress Inspiration from 2008 Oscars

Prom Dress Inspiration from 2008 Oscars

By Casey Lewis, About.com

The writer's strike is over and our favorite leading ladies are back, doing what they do best. We're not talking about acting. Movies are fine, but we prefer our starlets twirling down the red carpet in fancy designer finery.

1. Anne Hathaway

Corsages are pretty, of course, but those poor petals have no chance of lasting through a night of dancing. Take cues from the always-flawless Anne Hathaway and wear your flowers on your frock.

On the shoulders, around the neckline, at the waist, or in blossoming patterns, blooms have a magical Cinderella appeal.

2. Olivia Thirlby

Olivia Thirlby (the awesome bestie in Oscar-nom Juno) wore a very classic black ballgown and wore minimal jewelry - quite a modest choice for a young up-and-comer.

Although you can't tell from this snapshot, Olivia jazzed up her dress and added a necessary dose of "cool" by choosing completely unexpected bright lavender pumps. Fun!

3. Rosemund Pike

Don't let 27 Dresses scare you away from pastels; Rosamund Pike reassures us that sherbet tones can look refreshing and fun -- and nothing like a bridesmaid gone awry.

Avoid frosted makeup (bright red lips and nails to match looked particularly fab!), dyed-to-match pumps, and precious ball gown silhouettes

4. Miley Cyrus

Miley Cyrus chose an incredibly grown-up dress and expertly managed to look completely age-appropriate.

A few of her secrets? The chic chignon was balanced with fun, dangly rubies. Dramatic diamonds were skipped in favor of one very cool cocktail ring. And last but not least, her makeup was so understated she looked as if she came straight from 4th period.

5. Amy Adams

No matter what the abundance of sequined, beaded, embellished prom dresses imply, less is more -- even on prom night.

Amy Adams wore a beautifully understated green dress and added glamour with the addition of bold gold accessories.
